Acute lower back pain (LBP), not caused by an accident, mostly affects the lower area of ​​the spine, is called lumbago or acute lumbago. Typically, lumbago is often triggered by a more everyday movement, such as in sports, but also simply when standing up or picking things up. The stabbing pain shoots in the back without warning. Sometimes those affected can no longer stand up completely or only with severe pain.

Please see your doctor as soon as possible, if you have one of the additional symptoms below:

  • Fever
  • Tingling or numbness in the legs
  • Signs of paralysis in the legs
  • Urinary and intestinal dysfunction
  • Sexual dysfunction or sensory disturbances in the intimate area

The tension, displacements or blockages irritate the nerves in the spine, which is why the pain usually remains local and does not radiate. Any movement that can lead to further pain is avoided. This leads to a protective posture, which in turn can lead to even more tensions. Muscles, tendons and joints suffer from this, further back problems are caused by the protective posture, a vicious circle (circulus vitiosus) is formed.

To experience some relief, simply treat yourself, if no other illnesses prevent it, with a heat treatment or just simply take a warm shower if you can. Direct the shower jet over the painful areas, i.e. the lower back and lumbar vertebrae, this relaxes tight muscles. If you are still suffering, take prescription-free pain medication as directed by your doctor or your pharmacist to avoid relieving posture. Elevated positioning and lateral positioning can also alleviate the symptoms somewhat.

In acute lumbago discomforts sometimes disappear by themselves overnight or after a few days. Is this not the case, pain and blockages disappear after weeks . But keep in mind, prevention is always better than cure. An important risk factor for lumbago is definitely when the lack of sport and excercise weakens the back.
